Enjoy the Trail by Rail, Bike, or Both!
Built as a railroad in the late 1800s, this rail-to-trail allows travel between Chehalis and Raymond, ending east of the Washington Pacific Coast. The Willapa Hills Trail, formally known as Willapa Hills State Park Trail (Discover Pass required), is intended for non-motorized vehicles. The trail stretches 56 miles in total, with 22 miles between Chehalis and Pe Ell continuously accessible as of early June 2016.
Bicycles other than lightweight road bikes are recommended for the trail, which can be enjoyed by fat-tire bicycle enthusiasts. It is suitable for families as it is relatively flat, passable in most weather conditions, and accessible from eight trailheads along its route. The most popular trailhead is located in Chehalis, WA at Exit 77, just one mile off Interstate 5.
A unique option for experiencing the trail is the Bike and Ride Train Excursion. Running parallel to the Willapa Hills Trails on the Northern Pacific rail line is the former Chehalis Western Line, operated by the scenic Chehalis Centralia Railroad. This tourist train transports passengers and their bikes seven miles from the Depot, where riders can continue on the Willapa Hills Trail or return to their starting point. These rides are available every weekend, three times a day.
The Willapa Hills State Park Trail passes through traditional territories of several Chinookan and Coast Salish Indigenous peoples, whose present-day descendants include members of the Shoalwater Bay Indian Tribe, Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation, and Cowlitz Indian Tribe.
*All-terrain tires recommended!
The cost for the train ride is $29 for adults, $27 for seniors (62+), and $21 for children (5-12), plus an additional $10 to check a bike on board. We are offering this Bike & Ride train every Saturday and Sunday from May through September. Rides are at 10 a.m., 12 p.m., and 4 p.m.. The train ride portion of your journey is about 45 minutes from Chehalis to Spooner Road.
Click here to reserve tickets or call (360) 748-9593 for more information. Walk-ups welcome. Each ride is limited to 20 bikes. Free parking.

Ride Seating
99 Business Car Parlor
The 99 Business Railcar was originally built in 1915 and was converted from a standard sleeping car to a business car for the Spokane, Portland and Seattle (SP&S) railroad in 1926. The car is a fully restored executive coach featuring a climate-controlled parlor that once served as a rolling office and lounge for railroad officials. Upholstered armchairs provide seating for six, and a rear observation platform is perfect for taking in the passing scenery. Originally used for high-level meetings and inspections along the rail line, the 99 now offers passengers a nostalgic glimpse into the golden age of train travel.

99 Business Car Dining Room
The 99 Business Railcar is a luxurious vintage coach built for both comfort & prestige. Once reserved for railroad tycoons, it is now the perfect gathering space for groups of 6-8 to experience what it was like to ride the rails in style.
The car was upgraded in 1959 with all the modern amenities of the time and features original interiors, comfortable seating, and climate control. Featuring two sleeper rooms, two private staterooms and a kitchen area.
Chehalis Centralia Railroad & Museum obtained the car and refurbished it in 2017. With its refined atmosphere and historic charm, the SP&S 99 offers a first-class glimpse into the golden era of rail travel.
